Is Moab Too Hot for a Summer Elopement? (Spoiler, YES!)

I’m going to be very direct here because this gets romanticized online in a way that does not match reality.

Yes, Moab is too hot for a summer elopement.
And because of that, I do not photograph Moab elopements in the summer at all.

Not because it is trendy to say that.
Because it genuinely does not create a good experience for you or your photos.

If you are currently in the middle of your Moab elopement planning, this is one of the most important decisions you will make for your entire experience.

What Summer in Moab Actually Feels Like

From June through early September, Moab regularly reaches 95 to 105 degrees and often higher.

And this is not a dry heat that feels “manageable” like people online like to say.

There is almost no shade in most ceremony locations
The sun reflects off the red rock and intensifies everything
The ground radiates heat all day long
Wind feels hot instead of cooling

Even simple things like walking between locations or standing still for portraits become draining very quickly.

This is why most couples working with a Moab elopement photographer who knows the area well are guided away from summer entirely.

Why Summer Moab Elopements Don’t Feel Like You Imagine

Most couples come in picturing something slow and meaningful
Time to explore
Space to breathe
A relaxed, emotional day

But summer conditions usually change that experience into something very different

Rushing through photos to get back to AC
Feeling overheated within minutes of being outside
Limiting locations just to survive the heat
Struggling to stay present during the ceremony

And that is not what intentional Moab elopement planning should feel like.

Your elopement should not feel like something you are trying to get through.

It Also Impacts Your Photos More Than People Realize

From a photography standpoint, summer in Moab is extremely limiting

Harsh overhead light creates strong shadows
Colors can look washed out or overly contrasty
Heat haze can affect clarity in wide landscapes

Even with the best timing, the environment is still working against us.

This is one of the biggest reasons I structure my Moab elopement work around specific seasons only.

Why I Do Not Photograph Moab Elopements in Summer

This is a firm boundary in my work as a Moab elopement photographer.

If I know a season will compromise your experience, your comfort, and your photos, I am not going to offer it just to book a date.

There are far better times of year that allow your day to feel intentional, spacious, and actually enjoyable.

The Seasons I Recommend Instead

If you are considering planning your Moab elopement, here is when I do photograph there:

March and April:
Comfortable temperatures
Soft light
Perfect for exploring multiple locations without rushing

October and November:
Warm, golden tones
Much more comfortable conditions
Ideal light for photography and storytelling

These months are when Moab feels like what you see in the best elopement galleries online.

My Honest Recommendation

If Moab is where your heart is, give yourself the version of it that actually feels good.

Not the version you have to survive.

Choosing the right season is the difference between managing your environment all day and actually being present in it.

And that is what makes a Moab elopement unforgettable.
